3rd Year Wide Receivers

The theory in football is that for the receiver position it usually takes a player 3 seasons to catch on and break out in the league. This usually about the point were you can start to label a player as bust or not. Players last year that broke out in their 3rd season were Braylon Edwards and Roddy White. Chris Henry had some success after he returned from his suspension. Roydell Williams had a decent season and did improve on his numbers. Receivers such as Troy Williamson, Mike Williams, Matt Jones and Mark Clayton all first round picks have all been busts so far in their careers. None show much or any promise prior to their 3rd season.

The 2006 NFL Draft class for receivers have had some breakout players that most people are well aware of. Players like Santonio Holmes, Marques Colston, Greg Jennings, and Brandon Marshall have already had fantasy success early in their careers and all should go within the first few rounds. This class does have some star players, but overall doesn’t have much depth. Some like Chad Jackson, Sinorice Moss, and Devin Hester haven’t gotten much playing time due to injuries or inability to get on the field.

Jackson was much hyped coming into New England but has been plagued by knee injuries. With Donte’ Stallworth gone to Cleveland, Jackson will compete for that 3rd or 4th option for Tom Brady. If he can get healthy Jackson has huge upside and is a steal late in the draft or on the waiver wire.

Sinorice Moss doesn’t figure to be a factor this season for the Giants. They have Burress, Toomer, and second year guy Steve Smith who showed much promise as a rookie. Moss in undraftable at this point

Hester doesn’t have much experience as a receiver and is too raw to be a consistent receiver in the league. He does have the explosiveness and playmaking ability to get better and still warrants consideration as a late flyer in the final rounds.

A name to keep an eye on is Derek Hagan for Miami. Hagan has good size at 6’2 and should improve on his 29 catches for 373 yards and 2 TD’s. Most notably Hagan had a good game against Buffalo in week 14 with 8 catches for 93 yard. Hagan is not going to set the league on fire or break any records but he is a good value later in the draft and could be a #3 or #4 flex option for deep leagues if the 3rd year theory holds.

2008 NFL Mock Draft

January 29, 2008

*Denotes teams that will decide draft order by coin flip.

1) Miami Dolphins-Glenn Dorsey (DT) LSU: Good pick for the Dolphins who need immediate help and youth along the defensive line. Miami may look to deal this pick if they can as it is hard to invest #1 overall money to an interior lineman.

2) St. Louis Rams-Jake Long (OT) Michigan: The Rams will be torn between both Jake and Chris Long as they need help on both sides of the line. St. Louis will take the big left tackle as Orlando Pace’s heir apparent for the future.

*3) Atlanta Falcons-Matt Ryan (QB) Boston College: Another tough pick as the Falcons will have to decide between franchise QB Matt Ryan or the top prospect in this years draft Darren McFadden. In the end Atlanta will take the QB the franchise desperately needs after last off-seasons mess of trading away Matt Schaub and then dealing with the Vick scandal shortly after.

*4) Oakland Raiders-Darren McFadden (RB) Arkansas: McFadden would be a gift for JaMarcus Russell if he is available for the Raiders to take. Could pull an encore of what Adrian Peterson did in ’07.

*5) Kansas City Chiefs-Sedrick Ellis (DT) USC: The Chiefs go with need here and take Ellis over DE Chris Long. Ellis may be just as good and ready for the NFL as Dorsey is, but lacks the name recognition. Making him a better value at #5, than Dorsey at #1. If Matt Ryan is available here, look for the Chiefs to take him instead.

6) New York Jets-Chris Long (DE) Virginia: If Long is still available at this pick it should be a no brainer for the Jets. Long has everything you look for in an end and has the motor and intensity to go with it. If Long is not here at #6, look for the Jets to strongly consider DE Vernon Gohlston the Junior out of Ohio State.

7) New England Patriots-Aqib Talib (CB) Kansas: The Patriots upgrade their secondary with arguably the best corner in the draft. Talib has the size (6’1 195) and speed to play man-to-man. A good 40 time at the combine will solidify him as the top corner in the ’08 class.

8) Baltimore Ravens-Vernon Gholston (DE) Ohio State: Gholston will be this years Vernon Davis at the combine. He will add some youth and talent to an aging Baltimore Defense. Compares to Shawn Merriman in his ability to get after the QB. Had 14 sacks his junior year.

9) Cincinnati Bengals-Dan Conner (LB) Penn State: In the hopes of Sedrick Ellis not falling, the Bengals take the next best available defensive player Dan Conner. Conner is Penn States all-time leader in tackles, which says something for all the linebackers to come through Happy Valley.

10) New Orleans Saints-Keith Rivers (LB) USC: The Saints need as much help as they can get on defense. Rivers is a blue chip prospect who moves well for 6’3 235 pounds. Should make an immediate impact from Day 1.

11) Buffalo Bills-Leodis McKelvin (DB) Troy: The Bills take the fast rising corner out of Troy as they look to improve their weak secondary. They could consider a wide-out here but having a greater need in the secondary.

12) Denver Broncos-Kenny-Phillips (FS) Miami: The 6’2 211 pound junior standout is by far the best safey prospect in this year’s draft. The Broncos take Phillips to eventually replace the aging John Lynch.

13) Carolina Panthers-Ryan Clady (OT) Boise St.: Carolina has many needs, especially on offense. They have expiring contracts of both Left and Right Tackles and probably won’t be able to re-sign both.

14) Chicago Bears-Brian Brohm (QB) Louisville: This pick almost makes too much sense for the Bears. They could also go with Kentucky QB Andre Woodson, but Brohm is more NFL ready now.

15) Detroit Lions-Jonathan Stewart (RB) Oregon: The Lions are thin at RB expecially now that Kevin Jones is rehabbing for the second straight off-season with a torn ACL this time. Stewart is the second best RB prospect on most boards and is a big and strong back at 5’10 235 lbs.

16) Arizona Cardinals-Calais Campbell (DE) Miami: Campbell is a freak at 6’8 280 pounds and stock will probably rise after individual workouts at the combine. His stock did drop somewhat after a disappointing senior season.

17) Minnesota Vikings-Sam Baker (OT) USC: Baker is a good pass blocker who returned for his senior season to move up the draft boards. Should make for one of the better O-lines in the league.

18) Houston Texans-Jeff Otah (OT) Pittsburgh: Otah is still developing as a football player, having only played one year of high school football. Big time athlete who is quick on his feet and has huge upside.

19) Philadelphia Eagles-DeSean Jackson (WR) California: Jackson is too talented and explosive for the Eagles to pass on. Will take some pressure of Westbrook and is an electric return man. Needs to put on some weight for the NFL pounding he will take.

20) Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Malcolm Kelly (WR) Oklahoma: Will be interesting to see where the Bucs go with this pick with an aging QB in Jeff Garcia. Garcia seems to have a few years left, so they pass on Andre Woodson and take the 6’4 220 pound Kelly. May go earlier in the draft, Kelly is rated the #1 or #2 receiver on most draft boards.

21) Washington Redskins-Derrick Harvey (DE) Florida: The Redskins have needed somebody to get to the QB for years now. Harvey can do that with excellent speed coming off the edge.

22) Dallas Cowboys-Mike Jenkins (DB) USF: The Cowboys need another corner opposite Terrance Newman. Jenkins has all the tools to develop into a #1 shutdown corner and is a great value at #22.

23) Pittsburgh Steelers-Chris Williams (OT) Vanderbilt: The Steelers grab the last available first round talent tackle. Williams is a good prospect at 6’5 320 pounds with good feet and above average athleticism for and offensive lineman.

24) Tennessee Titans-Limas Sweed (WR) Texas: The Titans need to upgrade their sub-par receiving core and take Vince Young’s former college teammate Limas Sweed. Sweed was a potential top-10 pick before until wrist injury slowed his senior season. If he runs well at the combine he may not last this late at #24. With his size at 6’5 220 pounds, teams will be too tempted to let him pass.

25) Seattle Seahawks-Chilo Rachal (OG) USC: The Seahawks run game has not been the same ever since Steve Hutchinson bolted two seasons ago. Rachal is a mammoth at 6’6 340 pounds and moves well for his size. Has a lot of upside and plays with a mean streak you want in an interior lineman.

26) Jacksonville Jaguars-Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (DB) Tennessee State: The Jags need another DB and go with BPA here. ‘DRC’ is another fast rising corner who didn’t get a lot of attention at Tennessee State. You can be sure you will hear his name rising all the way up to draft day.

27) San Diego Chargers-Kentwan Balmer (DT/DE) North Carolina: Would be surprised to see Balmer fall this far. If he does this is a good pick for the Chargers who could use some depth along their defensive line.

28) Dallas Cowboys-Mario Manningham (WR) Michigan: Dallas would have an excellent draft if the could land both Mike Jenkins and Mario Manningham. Manningham has a knack for making the play and should be available for when Dallas selects at 28.

29) San Francisco 49ers-Phillip Merling (DE) Clemson: Merling is another guy whose stock is rising now. Merling is good against the run and had 17 tackles for loss in 2007 with Clemson.

30) Green Bay Packers-Reggie Smith (DB) Oklahoma: Versatile big corner who can play safety as well at 6’1 200 lbs. Al Harris and Charles Woodson form one of the best corner duos in the league but they aren’t getting any younger.

31) New York Giants-Erin Henderson (LB) Maryland: The two-time all-ACC standout from Maryland should give the Giants some much needed help and depth at linebacker. Henderson has good size at 6’3 242 lbs. If one of the top corners fall they may go there for the second year in a row in the first round.

32) New England Patriots-Forfeited pick

Post-Week 14 Injury Report

Week 14 Injuries for Week 15
Doubtful / Out:
Rex Grossman QB Bears - Out Knee – His knee is bad, but not bad enough for surgery just yet. Grossman left the game early Thursday with a sprained MCL on his left knee.

Questionable:
Anquan Boldin WR Cardinals – Questionable Toe/Hip – Last week Fitz was questionable. This week Anquandimonium is questionable. Bolden has been declared as inactive week 15 due to other players coming of injury. He can now get better.
Matt Schaub QB Texans - Questionable Shoulder – It looks like Matt is going for a second opinion tomorrow on his shoulder.
Justin Fargas RB Raiders – Questionable Ribs – Fargas left the game in the forth quarter with bruised ribs after having an average game this last Sunday.
L.J. Smith TE Eagles – Questionable Knee/Ribs – This rough and tough tight end had MRI’s done on his knee and one on his cartilage tear on his ribs. .
Marc Buldger QB Rams – Questionable Concussion – His concussion is still aling him. As it continues to bother him he will be considered uestionable.
Ike Hillard WR Buccaneers – Questionable Back – Gruden has stated that he will not know the status of hillard until after Wednesday. He is being worked and checked by doctors and trainers.

Probable:
Jeff Garcia QB Buccaneers –Probable Back – After a disappointing lose to the Texans, it looks like Garcia will step back in at home with his bruised back. Look to start him this week.
Kurt Warner QB Cardinals - Probable Elbow/Knee/Ribs – This guys is so banged up that his trainers will have to work on him for several hours everyday. With everything bothering him he still manages to make it in the game.
Marshawn Lynch RB Bills – Probable Ankle – Even with Lynch showing improvement, Coach Jauron has stated that he will only get a little more this week. It looks like the Coach is leaning towards running with a committee. It seams that with Lynches injury he is loosing grip of the sole starting job. Sharing carries will hurt his fantasy value.
Lavernous Coles WR Jets - Probable Ankle – It was reported that Coles has a high ankle sprain. It was also reported that he was in sever pain at the podium after the game.
Philip Rivers QB Chargers – Probable Knee – His knee is still bothering him. He will be limited in practice this week. It looks like he is going to have it looked at again this week.

Week 14 Offensive Projections -- By Team

This tool details the fantasy matchups that are advantageous in week 14. While most projections are subjective by nature, these are strictly objective calculations, dependent on each team's average offensive statistics and their opponent's average defensive statistics.

This week, in addition to our, normal weekly projections, we've also included Week 14 projections based on what's transpired offensively and defensively over the last 4 weeks. The short term trends around Fantasy Play-off time are just as important as the longer term trends.

The tables show each team, the respective opponent this week, and a calculation of their expected production in the following offensive categories:

Week 14 Consistency Rankings

Consistency Rankings -- Week 14

The consistency rankings are another metric we use to gauge the performance of fantasy players; they are also an extremely helpful tool in making lineup decisions -- for example, when choosing between two players at the same position with similar match-ups, the player with the higher consistency rank is almost always the smart way to go.

We believe that the consistency rankings are one of the best tools to judge fantasy performance, because they look not only at the total fantasy points a player has scored, but at the distribution of those points, by week. Steady players, who consistently score higher than the position "baseline", or worst starter, are rewarded, while volatile players, who post elite numbers one week and sub-par numbers the next week, are penalized. Unlike year to date aggregate fantasy points, or per game average fantasy points, the consistency rankings are not overly skewed by one or two monster games.

Week 14 Strong Plays and Weak Plays

Strong QB Plays

Marc Bulger @CIN: Bulger has been cleared to practice (concussion) and is expected to start this week against the Bengals. Bulger should pick up right were he left off and is in for a big game against an awful Bengals Defense.

David Garrard vs. CAR: Garrard is proving himself as a serious fantasy QB the past few weeks. In his last three games he has totaled 742 yards passing and 5 TD’s. Garrard is a strong play this week at home against the Panthers.

Weak QB Plays

Eli Manning @PHI: Eli once again proved last week that he is not an every week fantasy starter. You should only consider Eli if your only other QB is Joey Harrington.

Strong RB Plays

Ryan Grant vs. OAK: The guy has been on a tear since taking over as the starter in week 8. Grant will have another solid day at home against a bad Oakland Run D.

Kolby Smith @DEN: Larry Johnson is expected to miss another game (foot) this week on the road against the Broncos. If you managed to pick Smith up on the waiver wire a few weeks ago, keep riding him as he will get most of the touches again this week.

Weak RB Plays

Laurence Maroney vs. PIT: The Patriots do not use Maroney enough for him to be started. The worst part about Maroney is even when they are inside the 5 yard line, they give the goal line TD’s to fullback Heath Evans. Sit Maroney on your bench and deal with the fact that the he is one of the biggest fantasy busts this season.

Strong WR Plays

Isaac Bruce @CIN: Father Time has been very consistent over the past 5 weeks and is a must start this week against the Bengals. Bruce has scored in 3 of the past 4 games.

Joey Galloway @HOU: Another ageless wonder continues to amaze with his blazing speed. Whether Garcia or Luke McCown starts this week at QB against the Texans, Galloway is a strong play.

Santonio Holmes @NE: Holmes practiced on Wed. and is expected to play this week against the Pats. The Steelers desperately need Holmes this week to have a chance to knock off the undefeated Patriots.

Roddy White vs. NO: White has torn it up the past two weeks and has a great match up this week at home against the Saints on Monday Night. White is a solid play this week as a #3 WR.

Weak WR Plays

Chris Henry vs. STL: After starting out on fire his first two games after returning from his 8 game suspension, Henry has disappointed of late. Henry is only worthy of starting in deep leagues as a #3 or 4 WR.

Week 13 Injuries for Week 14

Week 13 Injuries for Week 14

Doubtful / Out:

Steve McNair QB Ravens - Out Shoulder – He is going to under go season ending rotor cuff surgery this week.

Roy Williams WR Lions – Out Knee – They first reported a knee sprain. With further testing it shows a PCL injury witch will keep him out of the rest of the season.

Derrick Ward RB Giants – Out Lower Leg – In the middle of the forth quarter he broke his left Fibula. It is unclear at this moment if he will be able to return this season.

Questionable:

Larry Fitzgerald WR Cardinals – Questionable Groin – Even though he is listed as questionable on the injury report. The coach feels strongly that Fitz will play week 14.

Marshawn Lynch RB Bills – Questionable Ankle – This is the forth week he has been on this report as questionable. Coach Jauron is hopeful this week that he will play. Check back Sunday to make any adjustments.

Selvin Young RB Broncos – Questionable Arm – Last week it was his knee, this week it is his arm. Look to see this man play week 14.

Matt Schaub QB Texans - Questionable Shoulder – This brave soul was hit and hit a lot on Sunday. It does not look like he has been scratched for week 14 yet. It does not look good for his return this week.

Damon Huard QB Chiefs – Questionable Elbow – On his seventh sack of the game he was hit on the elbow. With Brodie Coyle and Huard out, Mr. Thigpin came in to play. Look to start another QB this week if you have one.

Jessie Chatman RB Dolphins – Questionable Ankle – Looks like he re hurt his right ankle sprain. This team has seen it all. I would stay away from this team if you can.

Marc Buldger QB Rams – Questionable Concussion – This Ram is going to have special tests done (neurosych exam) to see if he will be cleared for Sundays game.

Brian Leonard WR Rams – Questionable Ankle – He should play week 14 in a limited capacity.

Jeff Garcia QB Buccaneers – Questionable Back – ESPN reported that he has a hairline fracture. Both the coach and Garcia denied that report. He should play this week.

Probable:

Plaxico Burress WR Giants - Probable Ankle – He is a little banged up with an ankle and knee injury. He is a gamer he will play week 14.

Shawn Alexander RB Seahawks - Probable Wrist – With his first game back from a short injury break, he injuries his wrist. After his taste of the game he will play week 14. Look for Morris to help from time to time.

B.J. Askew RB Buccaneers – Probable Ankle – His ankle is still bothering him. He did not run the ball week 13 but did catch a few passes.

Lendale White RB Titans – Probable Finger – He dislocated his finger in the end of the 3rd quarter. Look for Brown to steal some carries week 14. Lendale will still play.

Santana Moss WR Redskins – Probable heel – His heel has been bothering him for a few weeks now. With that being said he caught 5 passes for 63 yards.

Clinton Portis RB Redskins – Probable Back – His back is what slowed him down to only 50 yards last week. This week he should pick up the pace a bit going into week 14 against the Bears.

Week 13 Strong Play-Weak Play

Strong QB Plays

Jay Cutler @OAK: Cutler has played extremely well the past two weeks and is primed for a big game this week against a weak Raiders pass defense.

Kurt Warner vs. CLE: Warner should have another big game this week at home against the Browns in a sure shootout.

Weak QB Plays

Eli Manning @CHI: Next to when Trent Dilfer was with the Bucs, Eli had one of the worst performances by a QB last week in recent memory. Sit Eli this week on the road against the Bears.

Strong RB Plays

Justin Fargas vs. DEN: Fargas torched the Chiefs last week on the ground and is now a must start. The only problem with Fargas is the chance of backup Jordan getting the goal line TD’s.

Thomas Jones @MIA: Jones tore up the Phins last time they met for 110 yards on 25 carries. Expect the same from Jones this week with hopefully a score.

Weak RB Plays

Andre Hall @OAK: Hall did not practice (ankle) Wednesday and Selvin Young is healthy this week and there is still a chance Travis Henry will play. Hall’s impact and carries will be limited this week.’

Strong WR Plays:

Hines Ward vs. CIN: Even with the shape of the field last week in Pittsburgh, Ward still had a solid game with 9 grabs for 88 yards. Going against the Bengals this week, Ward is in for a big day.

Joey Galloway @NO: If Garcia is a go for Sunday, Galloway is a solid #2 WR this week. In his last 6 games vs. the Saints, Galloway has scored 9 times.

Weak WR Plays

Steve Smith vs. SF: What a waste this year has been for the NFL's most explosive and talented receiver. It appears Smith most likely wont play this week (hamstring).

Injuries for Week 13

Week 12 Injuries for Week 13
Doubtful / Out:
Cedric Benson RB Bears - Out Ankle – His ankle injury is sever enough to require surgery. He will be out the rest of the season.
Chris Perry RB Bengals – Out Ankle – He is still on the PUP list. The clock is ticking on a decision that needs to be made about his official status by the Bengals.
Terry Glenn WR Cowboys – Out Knee – There has been a scuttle bug that he may be ready to play. It has been reported that he is not ready and will not play against the Packers.
Ricky Williams RB Dolphins – Out Chest – His short come back to the NFL was made clear when a defensive player from the Steelers stepped on him during a fumble by Williams Monday night. He has been placed on IR due to a torn chest muscle.
D.J Hackett WR Seahawks – Out Ankle – He re injured is right ankle and will be out for two weeks or longer.

Questionable:
Marshawn Lynch RB Bills – Questionable Ankle – The rookie sensation is starting to run a little this week. Coach Jauron is still not sure if he will go.
Todd Heap TE Ravens – Questionable Hamstring – This is an injury that can nag a player for weeks and weeks. He is considered week to week due to his progress with this injury.
Selvin Young RB Broncos – Questionable Knee – Even though he is listed as questionable. He will most likely play this week.
Bubba Franks TE Packers - Questionable Knee – Thursday is going to come too fast for this Farve target. He just won’t be ready to lace them up against the Cowboys.
Ahman Green RB Texans – Questionable Knee – He was inactive last week and it looks like he will be this week as well. Coach Kubiak does not believe that Green will see the field this week.
Brandon Jacobs RB Giants – Questionable Hamstring – This doesn’t look good this week for Jacobs. The trainers are looking at him through out the week to see if they will be able to clear him to play.
Donovan McNabb QB Eagles – Questionable Thumb – The coach has stated that he does not want McNabb to play until he is 100%. The word on the street is that the only way they will trade McNabb is for 3 first round picks.
Santonio Holmes WR Steelers – Questionable Ankle – He should play week 13 in a limited capacity.
Isaac Bruce WR Rams – Questionable Hand – He sprained his hand last week. He is considered day to day. Check back Sunday to see if he will play.

Probable:
Byron Leftwich QB Falcons - Probable Tailbone – Even though he will be healthy to play, he will only back up Harrington this week
Patrick Crayton WR Cowboys - Probable Ankle – He is practicing and looks healthy enough to play week 12 against the Packers.
Javon Walker WR Broncos – Probable Knee – He was very limited last week. The coach believes that he will see more time this week.
Donald Driver WR Packers – Probable Foot – He practiced Monday but without pads. HE should play against the Cowboys.
Adrian Peterson RB Vikings – Probable Knee – MRI looks good, this purple people eater will be eating yards once again.
Tom Brady QB Patriots – Probable Elbow – Superman has a sore elbow from probably getting hit during the close game. He had a big bag of ice on his none throwing arm Monday after he left the looker room.

……………………………………………………………………………………………….....................

The rankings are based on WCOFF rules and setup.

Week 12 Offensive Projections -- By Team

This tool details the fantasy matchups that are advantageous in week 12. While most projections are subjective by nature, these are strictly objective calculations, dependent on each team's average offensive statistics and their opponent's average defensive statistics.

The table shows each respective team, their opponent this week, and a calculation of their expected production in the following offensive categories:

Completions
Passing Attempts
Passing Yards
Passing TDs

Week 12 Strong Play-Weak Play

Strong QB Plays

Eli Manning vs. MIN: Eli at home vs. the Vikes, should be in for 250+ with 2 TD’s.

David Garrard vs. BUF: If you don’t have one of the stud QB’s, go with Garrard this week at home against Buffalo. Garrard has played well of late and could be a nice spot start this week.

Matt Schaub @CLE: Schaub is primed for a big game this week at Cleveland. Having Andre Johnson back is huge and will do wonders to his fantasy value.

Weak QB Plays

Jay Cutler @CHI: Teams never fare well with a short week on the road after a Monday Night game. Don’t be fooled by Cutler’s impressive performance last week against the Titans. The Bears will keep him in check at Soldier Field on Sunday.

Strong RB Plays

Maurice Morris @STL: Mike Holmgren would have to be an idiot to consider giving Shaun Alexander his job back. Morris has been solid and the whole Seahawks Offense looks better since he took over for the injured/over-the-hill Alexander.

Kolby Smith vs. OAK: With Priest Holmes expected to announce his retirement this week and L.J. still out, Smith should get the start this week at home. The Raiders can’t stop anybody on the ground and Smith should get plenty of touches to rack up some yards and a score.

Weak RB Plays

Thomas Jones @DAL: The Cowboys have been shutting the run down this year and Jones cannot find the end zone. Don’t expect much from Jones this week.

Strong WR Plays

Hines Ward vs. MIA: With the phenom Santonio out this week, Ward will be the first and second read for Big Ben on Monday Night against the Dolphins. Ward is a must start this week. Also check out WR Nate Washington on your waiver wire as a spot start this week.

Greg Jennings @DET: Jennings is solid #2 WR option this week against the Lions on Thanksgiving. Lock it up.

Chris Henry vs. TEN: This guy has been on fire since returning from his 8 game suspension. He is a must start from here on out.

Weak WR Plays

Roddy White vs. ATL: Don’t expect much out of White again this week at home against the Colts. Only consider him if it’s for your #4 flex slot.
